Q: I’m new to affiliate marketing but am building a niche site focused on how to learn affiliate marketing for beginners, should I just makeup my “about me” page?
First Impressions Have Only One Chance
I was asked the above question earlier today and want to provide a thorough answer to it. After all, it makes sense to not want to divulge your newness to the world, or does it?
Let’s dig deeper.
Consider your affiliate marketing pursuits like dating. The only difference here is that you are attempting to have a deep and meaningful connection with every visitor that comes to your site. For obvious reasons, that isn’t going to happen all the time. It is a percentage game.
However, getting back to the analogy of a date, if you pick up even the slightest hint that your interest is lying to you what is that likely to do for the beginnings of your relationship? Making things up because you don’t want to be exposed will not work well for you in the end within your dating relationship or within the world of affiliate marketing online business success.
Your credibility will be shot in both scenarios.
But what if you can pull the wool over their eyes so they don’t see the deception? In either case, if they follow you for any length of time it is likely to be discovered at some point. That will be the very point where your credibility goes out the window and your influence is lost.
For example, let’s say that they join your mailing list after reading the fabricated about me page. Now you are speaking with them each time that they receive your eMail. What is the potential possibility that you will one day write something that reveals the truth?
In my opinion it is likely.
Why an Expert Status is Important?
Let me step back for one moment and consider the basis of this question. Why would someone want to consider making their story up when it comes to an about me page?
The answer to that question is obvious in my book.
They want to be an authority and a person if influence. When it comes to affiliate marketing results, this brings power to the equation of success. People buy from people they trust. Period.
For example, if you or your child needed brain surgery wouldn’t you want to know that you have the best of the best taking care of the medical treatment? Your certainly not going to want someone just out of med school. They need to have experience. You need to know that you can trust them without reservation. All of that makes 100% success.
While the above is true it does not cross over to all professions.
Do you care if your garbage collector never collected a single can previously?
Do you care if the person who wrote this article never wrote a single article previously?
Do you care if your mailman is working the first day on their job?
If the job is done right, you don’t care.
Of course, the job must be done right unlike my first day of delivery mail back in 1990. I was getting so lost and turned around and it was winter. I was a rural carrier which is one who delivers from the comfort of their own car out in the country. I had been working all day and was only halfway done with my route. It was getting dark. I couldn’t see.
Only half my customers received mail that day and it was Saturday. I decided to take my mail home and go back out on Sunday.
About 9PM that night I received a call from my Post Master. He was not a happy customer. I explained that I was going to finish the job on Sunday and he became even less happy with me. He warned me that if even 1 letter showed signs of being tampered with my goose would be cooked.
I did not at that time realize that taking mail home was a Federal offense.
Even worse yet, it was the day when property taxes were due. His phone had been ringing off the hook because customers were not getting their property tax in on time.
I obviously did not do my job correctly that day. That’s when people started caring and not in a good way. However, if I did things right they could care less.
When Being an Expert Has Disadvantages
In some cases, not being an expert does have its advantages. Affiliate marketing would be one of those cases.
When people have spent years and years within a trade they can lose sight of something very important. They can lose sight of the beginning where everything started.
If this happens and they attempt to converse with a newbie, then they end up speaking a language that cannot be clearly interpreted by their audience. This is known as speaking above the head of their audience.
This is not good.
Your followers will lose focus and faith in their ability to understand what you are saying. They may see that without question you know what you are talking about. Unfortunately, they just can’t understand you and so they go elsewhere for their education.
The last thing you want them to do is go elsewhere.
Take my own pursuit of Affiliate Marketing for example.
I have bought tons of training courses in this field but failed to realize the profit potentials available until I found Wealthy Affiliate. I have literally spent thousands trying to fully understand how to become a successful affiliate marketer. Many of the courses I went through were awesome but they didn’t understand how to talk specifically to me.
I needed someone who could honestly and truly walk with my step by step through the trenches of my education. Unfortunately, I found no one.
I did not give-up on my pursuit and knew that one day I would indeed break into this field. While I do consider myself an expert in online marketing affiliate marketing did elude me. My mainstay for a long time has been local SEO marketing for clients needing to build their clientele. That however, is another story so I won’t proceed further with that now.
What’s Better Than an Expert
What the writer of this question needs to understand is that they have something far better than expertise. They have desire. They have passion. They have the beginning.
This is the voice that needs to be conveyed to their readers on their about me page.
When a reader see’s that they are a real person there is a better chance that they will add new user account interest to your blog or website. Anyone who is seriously interested in being where they want to go they will pay attention. The only difference between a novice and an expert is 10%.
So, you are just getting started with your expertise.
So, you are beginning to unfold the journey ahead.
Be real with your audience. Let them hear about your pains, your hardships and your victories. Let them feel your frustrations. Let your audience walk with you through your journey and you will find a loyal following of people who are ready to buy whatever you recommend.
Because you are being honest with them. You are showing them that you are full of integrity and that has enormous value. They want to know that they can trust you implicitly.
When you show your audience the good, the bad and the ugly of your learning process you get all the above in an extremely powerful way. You are not a brain surgeon here and you do not need to be. You are a friend, an advocate and a guide.
Share your story.
They will listen.
They will follow.
They will buy.
And, they will be loyal to you if you maintain the true art of believability.
Let’s put you in the position of being the viewer, the visitor, the date for one moment. Wouldn’t you want to know that you are being told the truth? Wouldn’t you want to know that you can trust? Wouldn’t you?
Give your audience exactly what you would want and you will find them paying a great deal of attention to you.
As it relates to online marketing it gets even better. Not only will they be paying attention but they will also be sharing, commenting and interacting with you. That catches the eyes of Google and other search engines in a very powerful way.
So, be real. Be yourself.
Show your cuts, your bruises and your struggles. Let your audience experience the process of your success being achieved with you. You’ll be glad you did.
