Fortunately, the answer is yes, but before we start let’s be clear about what we are talking about in a world where lack of clarity seems to be par for the course.

LOCAL SEO DEFINED

A locally targeted online marketing project is generally thought of as a Web project that desires to reach a given local client or customer base (ie dentist).  While this is certainly true, if done right, a locally focused endeavor can also target a product centric idea (ie scuba diving) as long as it makes sense to the local area you are targeting.  For example, I’m sure that there are significantly more people interested in scuba diving in Catalina California than the entire state of Kansas.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION DEFINED

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art of being found in the organic results of search engine traffic.  Most people consider this the 60% window of Google and other search engines that does not involve pay per click traffic which you need to pay to appear within.

However, for the purposes of this article we will not be defining search engine optimization within this parameters.  That is not to say that they are incorrect but rather they have missed the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow while you won’t after reading the following content.

BEYOND BASIC ORGANIC RANKING

Some may be wondering about how we can rank organically without using the 60% window.  The answer is easier than you might think.  It’s called Google Local and appears within Google map results.

Let me ask you a question.

When your result from Google involves a map where do you look first?  If you’re like most of the people that I’ve asked that question to it would not be their AdWords PPC nor the content within the organic ranking information.  Nope, instead your eyes would be taken to the local ranking results that appear on Google’s map and for obvious reasons including the fact that this information is more likely to contain the information you are seeking than any other option.

5 OPTIMIZATION STRATEGIES FOR GOOGLE’s MAP

With that said and your account verified within Google Places here are 5 things to remember about optimizing Google’s map so that you appear at the top of the list.

  1. Complete your profile
  2. Citations are important
  3. Offer coupons
  4. Encourage referrals
  5. Release videos

PROFILES: Do your best to provide as much detail about your local business as possible within your profile.  The more complete your profile is the happier Google will be with ranking your results at the top of their directory.

CITATIONS:  Backlinks you build off of your may Google Places page are important.  Whenever possible include the exact name, address and phone number as what is listed within your Google Places information.  The most critical data to keep consistent is your phone number and address but having all 3 in check is really ideal.

COUPONS:  It seems like very few people use coupons within their listing.  This is a huge mistake as coupons are turned into backlinks which will drive your main project results much higher if they are connected correctly.

REFERRALS: We are in a reputation society today.  The more positive feedback people have to review about your company’s product or service the more likely that you will secure a new client or customer.  Therefore, make sure that your own profile contains referrals.

VIDEOS:  The second largest search engine on the Web is YouTube.  Google places allows you to share up to 5 videos on your profile.  I highly recommend creating optimized videos and sharing them on your Google Places profile as doing so can hyper power all your results very quickly.
